Elger Esser is a German artist who was born in Stuttgart in 1967 but moved to Rome, Italy, soon thereafter. He later returned to Germany and entered the highly regarded Dusseldorf Academy of Art where he studied with the famous photographers, Ernst and Hilla Becher.
His colour photographs, frequently very pale in hue, are designed to be both suggestive and nostalgic. Their striking silence and contemplative atmosphere is reminiscent of early 19th century photography. Esser's work also demonstrates an interest in the evocative quality of light and in this respect equally pays homage to the work of both Vermeer and Canaletto. Given their subject matter, these Etretat photographs can also be associated with the 19th century phenomenon of the travel postcard.
